One of the best reviews of my career was recently written by Doreen Cox Olmstead Publishing ![]() Doreen Cox Twitter (@mothersitting) by Doreen Cox It is the author's captivating cast of characters that sets this novel above those with simply a good plot. THE BEGINNING (Whispering Pines, Book One) is a cleverly arranged mystery novel that constructs a riveting tale of small-town financial greed and entitlement versus lawful business practices. West Creek is located in middle Georgia or, `Gawgia,' as the author fondly calls his state. The first chapters set an energetic pace for the entire novel, beginning at night in an old family cemetery where nefarious deeds are set to be carried out. Lumber is the main industry here and a legal battle between Matt Veal's lumber interests and Max Pary's plan to build exclusive lake-front estates has ensued. Legal actions have been put in motion to stop Max Pary from flooding out prime acres of woods. However, the Pary old-money family has seeming control of small-town legal and political parties so underhanded illegal actions are also in motion. Before the first night is over, Matt Veal is missing and the full reasons for his disappearance are shrouded in a 60 year old murder. Charles Wells treats the reader to a diverse and flavorful cast of characters. Chuck, a newspaper editor in North Carolina, is dauntless in his quest to find out what has happened to his brother, Matt. Gail, a coworker with psychic abilities, adds a touch of romance and mysticism to the story. Blake, `a dark, black man,' who shares lumber interests with Matt, is fearless and is revered by the eccentric characters who work for him. The story depicts a skillfully written cat-and-mouse game as to who will come out ahead in the end: the good guys or the bad. By the end of the novel, I felt as if I had tramped with the characters through an old overgrown cemetery, backwoods swamps and miles of forest. I was treated to a fascinating education about the process of milling lumber. One scene at the lumber mill and the use of a chipper is accorded a grisly scene, not for the faint of heart. THE BEGINNING is a great read for all who enjoy a fast-paced mystery, a spirited cast of courageous yet flawed characters and interesting descriptions of small-town life.
